Siri Fort ( March 2011)

Holding on in there...

The Outer Wall of the 14th Century Siri Fort..

The remains of a watch tower... with the archery openings and the decorations

This morning we went strolling in a small park close to our house, where we discovered purely  by accident, the remains of the Siri Fort.  In fact  the city of Delhi was built during the rule of Ala-ud-Din Khalji of the Delhi Sultanate and to defend the city from the onslaught of the Mongols, the city of Siri was built with a fortress to protect it.  Delhi was the second of the seven cities of medieval Douselhi built around 1303, entirely constructed by Muslims. According to the legend of Ala-ud-din’s war exploits, the name Siri given to the Fort was because the foundation of the fort was built on the severed heads (‘Siri’ in Hindi means “head”) of about 8,000 Mongol soldiers killed in the war.

The fort was once considered the pride of the city for its palace of a thousand pillars called the Hazar Sutan. The palace was built outside the fort limits, and had marble floors and other stone decoration. Its Darwaza (door) is supposed to have been beautifully decorated. In the part of the ruins there are remnants of flame shaped battlements, loop holes for arrows, and bastions, which were considered unique new additions of that period.

Common Wealth Games revival initiative for Siri Fort

At present, this key historical place can only be seen in ruins with a few remnants left unattended. This is yet another example of the sad transition this city is going through.

The premises were destroyed for the Asian Games in 1982 before any archaeologist could speak out. The Common Wealth Games of October 2010 tried to refresh the site and the park, only to come up with a few minor initiatives such as the rusty bank where even the concrete blocks were not removed…. More trees were felled to build the new Siri Fort Sport Complex…

2011… here we come

Happy New Year…. we are preparing to complete 4 years in India. Unfortunately we could not get the family together for a picture. I therefore collated some photo’s with at least one family member on it. That should do the trick.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar ….

Traore and Biba are visiting us for the moment, after nearly 12 years of not having seen each other. Our friendship dates from the early days of our marriage back in Arua, somewhere in Northern Uganda. We will have to talk about that episode in our lives one day. Traore is now the UNHCR representative in Togo.

They have a relaxing schedule here with us and  Maxi and Sarah are planning to travel with them to Rajasthan next week. Later they will go to Varanasi or the old Benares, taking a dip in the Ganges.  For now we are chatting every day, bringing back old memories. I had some worries that the Common Wealth games would disturb their visit but on the contrary, hardly any tourists in town, the traffic is smooth because there are thousands of policemen on the streets and everybody respects the traffic rules. All the old scruffy busses have been taken of the streets, to leave only the few new ones; all beggars were taken away miles from here, where it will take them 4 weeks to come back, stray dogs disappeared overnight.

If Delhi could look like this every day… we would stay here for a long time.

Leon Steponovitch Tolchinsky breaks the curse in Kulyenchikov

Leon the teacher discovering the lunatics in the village

Sebastien starred in the school play ‘ Fools’ as  Leon Tolchinsky, an ambitious young teacher, arriving in the village of Kulyenchikov where he encounters strange and lunatic characters. He meets with his employer Doctor Zubritsky and his wife after struggling with the local people who turned idiotic. When he is introduced to the Zubritsky’s daughter, Sophia, he is immediately lovestruck. Alas, she proves to be just as unintelligent as the rest of them, if not more so and his teaching becomes a nightmare.

... and he discovers there is a 200 year old spell on the village

He discovers that the town’s idiocy is actually the result of a 200-year curse of stupidity cast on them by Vladimir Yousekevitch after his son killed himself because the first Sophia Zubritsky (not the doctor’s daughter, but rather an ancestor with the same name) was forbidden to see Vladimir’s son by her father, who found out the boy was illiterate, and made to marry another man. If Leon can’t educate her within 24 hours of his arrival in Kulyenchikov, he too, will fall victim to the curse which can only be broken if he can educate Sophia . . . or if she marries a Yousekevitch.

As well as idiocy, the people of Kulyenchikov are also incapable of loving. Still, even without love, the last of the Yousekevitch line, count Gregor, proposes to Sophia twice a day. With more motivation than ever, Sebastien ( or rather Leon) , strives to educate Sophia. Try as he might, 9 o’clock rolls around, as announced by the magistrate, and all seems to be lost.

Teaching Sophia turned out to be impossible..

But Leon, being the smart young man that he is, fools everyone into believing the curse has befallen on him also and he starts acting like an idiot. Count Gregor adopts him as a son, and Leon and Sophia are set to be wed. At the last minute, Count Gregor admits that the adoption papers are actually divorce papers and the wedding is called off until he ‘kindly’ offers to marry Sophia himself. Leon is in trouble but with yet another trick up his sleeve, he asks Mishkin the postman for his urgent letter and announces that his uncle has died and left all his debts to him. He says that that changing their surname couldn’t help them escape the debt, and when asked what the surname was, he says “Yousekevitch.” Leon and Sophia are wed, and the curse of Kulyenchikov is broken. (The letter really contained a bill from his college, saying that Leon needed to finish paying his debts.)

Leon found a solution for the village and saves his marriage with Sophia

After the wedding, we see what has befallen all the characters. The Magistrate became a great judge, but fell into corruption and eventually was convicted for fraud. Mishkin wrote a six-hundred page novel on the Curse of Kulyenchikov, only to have it lost in the mail. Slovitch confirmed his greatest fears of being hopelessly stupid, when he bought four butcher shops in a town that only need one and went bankrupt within a month. Snetsky found his sheep, and eventually in time became a great philanthropist. Yenchna went into real estate and now owns seventeen houses in Kulyenchikov, including Count Gregor’s mansion.

Sophia and Leon

Lenya Zubritsky went into politics (becoming the first female mayor of Kulyenchikov) and now even her husband has to make appointments to see her. Doctor Zubritsky got accepted into a school of medicine and interior design became an esteemed doctor and now works for the Royal Family. Count Gregor renounced his bad ways and became the town monk.

Occasionally he goes to the top of the hill to pray for God to throw water upon the village. Leon continues to teach the lessons of life.

This was Sebastien’s best performance and we are really proud of him

Again an Epilogue…..

The moon like landscapes we drove through

What I miss

This is a short impression which I wanted to share with you, now more than a month after our 1000km journey on a bike. I actually just returned from a drive into Delhi at 8 PM this evening and planned to take  my bike around town to see the new metro stations and roundabouts but also to test the new front push rod which I placed last week. My frustration at this very moment is immense because I did not even get to the fly-over less than 3 km from our home. I  stood for 40 minutes in traffic jams just walking my bike through the cars. The traffic has become so heavy and dense nowadays that with a motorbike you do not get anywhere let alone with a car. After having seen the moon like landscapes and the orange white mountains for 10 days, I decided to return home pushing the motorcycle through the traffic and crossing a bus on my lane, whose conductor decided that driving in the opposite direction is a solution to the traffic jams. I will park the bike for a while until my frustration is over…. which might probably take a long time…

We posted our clips on Youtube under Himalaya Highway on a 500cc Royal Enfield, enjoy the preview

The Holiday is over…….

The Holiday is over…. the entire family is back in New Delhi and Monday August 9th the school had started. Sarah’s moving up to High School

A great day for Sarah

Sarah’s  Great Day….

Today was the 8th grade Moving Up ceremony and Sarah was one of the 101 girls and boys from the American Embassy school who finished Middle School and are moving into High School next year.

The moving up goes with a big official ceremony in the school. We all noticed that Sarah was nervous about it , she pushed the family in the car one hour before the ceremony was about to start and we had no minute to loose…… she had a good reason to be nervous…..

She collected the most awards in the ceremony. When the three Middle School awards were distributed, she was the first to be called on the podium to receive the Service Award from her peers and the faculty for her commitment to serving others in the middle school community. We know that this award came from Sarah’s deep and sincere engagement to care for others.

The awards kept on coming as the ceremony progressed.

The Obama Presidential Award

We know that the award she really wanted was the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. She previously got the award signed by George Bush while we were still in Harare. We framed it and called it the ‘JUBU’  prize. We knew that deep inside Sarah wanted that same very special award signed  by this very special person,  Barak Obama.

And yes…. she got the award for Outstanding Academic Excellence signed by Obama.

The ‘JUBU’ price helped us to get a seat in the American Embassy School here in Delhi and we know that a same award signed by Obama will be fostered in the family for a very long time. The letter from ObamaThe award comes with a nice and personal letter from the President.

In addition the school created a  new award this year,  issued by the faculty. The Faculty Recognition Award, which is only given to a few students for outstanding achievements but also with a passion for learning. Sarah was the only one to get three of the awards, one for Algebra, one for Spanish and one for Science….

Useless to say that this was a great day for the family

Marc on top of Mount Everest

Well not really on top, but pretty, pretty close. Flying to or from Bhutan is always an experience and  if you are lucky with the weather, the pilot will take you over the Himalayas and bring you close to the Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Today was such a unique day when I left Bhutan. I saw the Everest but also the K2, the Kangchhenjunga the Lhotse and the Makalu… all memorable peaks which I only remember from pictures or movies. We flew within one mile from the top of the Everest, and you could see the climbers…… A marvelous experience, flying over the border between Nepal, Bhutan, India and Tibet. Just another day which I will never forget in my life and another trophy on things that we have seen on this globe. I decided to open a special page on this.

Flying into Bhutan this time was also another experience not to forget. Paro airport  is the only paved airport in Bhutan and the airport is located at an altitude of 2,235 m in a steep valley on the bank of Paro river, it is like diving in a black hole through the mountains when you land.

Coming into Butan

With some of the surrounding mountains as high as 5,480 m it is considered to be “one of the world’s most challenging airports“. Flights into Paro are only allowed under very good visual meteorological conditions during daytime hours and this time I nearly did not get there. This is the image right after coming out of the low clouds, and getting visibility 3 minutes before landing and one hour before a heavy rain!!!! I discovered that only eight pilots in the world are certified to land at the airport. Today’s pilot was Australian with a good sense if humour. When coming close to the Everest, he announced… The folks on the right of the airplane might have now a view of the Everest, but don’t tell it to the people seated on the left of the plane, because if they move to the right, I will not be able to keep the plane straight…..

If you click on the picture, I share with you a manual which Boeing has produced for the pilots wanting to fly into Bhutan. I have added an additional special page to our Blog also.. see pages Bhutan.

Sebastien… Our track champion

The Champ is backThis morning, Sebastien came back from Bangladesh from a 5 day regional school competition. This year he was competing in High School, with much stiffer and harder competition from his mates. He brought back 2 gold medals for the 100m and 400m relay, one bronze medal for the 400 m individual run and a place in the finals for the 200m with a 4th place for the 100m ( just beaten by 0.05 seconds)..Reaching for the stars

Read the interview with the champ on his home coming

His dad: Sebastien, how did it go?

Sebastien: Yeah… 400m, .. first time I ran that distance in competition of this level… didn’t really know how to do it…. just decided to do 4 x 100m on my own and sprint 4 times in a row..it worked. Just beaten because of the heat and humidity in Dhaka,..

Team work with Pat, Jo and Michael went really well… nobody could catch us.

For the short track…. net year I bring back 4 gold medals..

7

Dad: And what about the field   competition?

Sebastien: Dun’t know …the coach decided to put me on the discus throw… I strategized to kick the disk first,….. but did not really work… when the coach told me I had to hold the disk and launch it with a swing.. the competition was over..

I was hosted in a really nice family and always felt at home ……now I am going to sleep…
